One of the most successful social media network, Facebook is a place of various activities for its users. People perform these different activities on Facebook on an hourly basis. There are number of applications on Facebook which allow people to interact or present gifts to different users. According to the reports, around 70 per cent of the users on Facebook send virtual gifts to their friends on Facebook.
But as per the research done in the recent times, the activities of the social media network have seen a major decline. People are getting away from the activities they use to perform on social media network. Number of applications that are launched on the regular basis has lowered down the interest in Facebook.
The usage of Facebook in June 2011 as compared to that of July 2009 has gone down according to the Global researcher. A decline has been in different activities such as virtual gifting, joining groups, instant messaging, messaging to the friend, new contact search as well as installation of applications. The virtual gifting application on Facebook has declined to 12.9 per cent in United States of America and worldwide it has gone down to 7.5 per cent in the period of two years.
The other activities such as messaging a friend over Facebook have gone down to 7.4 per cent across world and 14.8 per cent in United States of America. Searching for new contact has declined by 4.5 per cent worldwide and 12.7 per cent in United States. Whereas activities like joining new groups, instant messaging and installing of applications have declined by 12.8 per cent, 7.5 per cent, 10.4 per cent worldwide and 6.5 per cent, 1.5 per cent 3.1 per cent in the USA respectively.
Though there are certain activities that are on the decline side of the Facebook but there are some of the activities also that are on inclining side. Uploading videos is one such activity that has increased by 5 per cent in United States alone and 7.6 per cent worldwide. This helps to know that the Facebook users are using the social media network platform for communication purpose by uploading videos rather than messaging or joining different groups.
According to the executive of Facebook, there has been some changes found from time to time, but it is not correct to say that people have started losing interest in Facebook. The change has been found because there has been less usage of internet during the summer time as compared to other months in the year which is the seasonal concern for the social media network Facebook. The growth has been seen overall with people getting more and more engaged with the website.
According to the other research, the growth in the number of Facebook has increased by 13.4 per cent to 38.6 per cent in the year 2010. It is not only Facebook, but Twitter has also sharing the same platform with increase in the number of users in the coming years as compared to previous years.
